Fifteen minutes later I was back in my ready room. The quiet hum of the ship’s drives was no match for the relentless chaos in my mind.

Settling into my chair, I activated an alternate, secure halo display that Sonya had set up for me. The display was segmented into four distinct feeds. Each showed the members of the team assembled with one intention—to rescue Gail Pristy from the clutches of the malfunctioning DeckPort.

In one section, Derrota and Coogong huddled together in a lab I didn’t recognize, their faces illuminated by the glow of quantum-space simulation scenarios—working tirelessly, running one test model after another, searching for the key to unlocking the secrets of the DeckPort’s quantum entanglement.

Another section revealed Kaelen, strategically positioned in Engineering. His body was hunched over in concentration as he devised ways to circumvent the EUNF’s recently implemented DeckPort security measures. The situation demanded a meticulous approach, as a single error could draw unwanted attention from SARAH, and subsequently, the EUNF—jeopardizing our covert endeavor.

Sonya occupied the third quadrant. Perched there in the dark recesses of the Symbio Deck, she worked her keyboard, editing lines of QuansCode essential to our mission. Her black hat abilities had made her the perfect candidate for this task, but even she had to tread carefully; SARAH monitored the ship’s network with a continuous, watchful eye.

Finally, my gaze settled on Hardy, standing sentinel at the defective DeckPort. His unwavering dedication to the cause was a small comfort in the face of the challenges ahead.

As I watched my team work in stealth, scattered throughout the ship in obscure locations beyond SARAH’s reach, a sense of unease crept over me. The knowledge that Alpha Fleet would soon emerge from the manufactured wormhole, likely plunging into battle, only added to the pressure. As USS Washington and Alpha Fleet prepared to confront the external enemy, we found ourselves in an internal battle against time, desperately scrambling to rescue Gail Pristy from oblivion.
